The Koreshans offers a rare glimpse into a charismatic leader and his followers as they endeavored to create a thriving utopian community. This film looks at the work of a renowned Malian artist whose photographs have documented social and cultural changes in Mali over a 40-year period. The screening was very sparsely attended aside from my own students during their customary class meeting from 2 to 3:15 but this didn't bother me since it was the first time I had shown it and got to study it much more closely myself than if I had had a larger audience.

The English (British) Civilization Collection contains more than 1,500 letters and documents that were either purchased by the Boston Public Library or were donated. While researching the Her Ghost video, for example, the pair bought The British Encyclopedia of Sign Language, in which 18,000 words are shown in photographs of the corresponding gestures. “It struck us as the most beautiful object,” says Broomberg. “Not only is it explaining a whole language, it’s also a collection of portraits of those demonstrating the motions.” In response, they put together an A to Z for deaf children, which will be released this autumn.
